GULLIVER´S TRAVEL.

Chapter 1



1. Comprehension check:
1. What is Gulliver´s profession? a ship´s doctor. Why did he choose it? because he wanted to have an interesting life.

2. What was the name of the ship? the Antelope.

3. Why did the sailors leave the ship? because the ship hit a rock in the sea and began to sink.

4. Where did Gulliver fall asleep? on the sand.

5. What happened to Gulliver while he was sleeping? he had ropes around his body.

6. What did the men do when he tried to escape? they were shooting arrows at him.

7. What did the men construct? Why? they constructed a platform near his head because they wanted to communicate with him.

8. Why did they use the temple as a place to imprison Gulliver? because this temple was one of the largest buildings in the country.

9. Who were the first people who visited Gulliver in the temple? the Emperor and his princess.



2. Vocabulary: Fill in the missing words.
When Gulliver woke up he saw ropes all around his body. There were hundreds of tiny men on the beach. They shot arrows at him when he tried to escape. He decided to lie very still. Gulliver did not understand their language so they spoke using signs. They told him that the name of this country was Lilliput and that he was the prisoner of the Emperor.

Gulliver asked for food and they brought him cows, sheep and barrels of wine. They built a machine and many horses pulled Gulliver to the city. They took him to a temple where he had many visitors including the Emperor himself. People arrived from all over the city to look at him and some very daring people put ladders against his body and climbed up.

Chapter 3.

Chapter 5.



1. Comprehension check.The statements about the story 1-8 are not correct. Correct them, giving a quotation from the story to prove you are right. There is an example.
 
1. The sailors saw a small village near the beach. There was no sign of a village or town. No one lives here.

2. The sailors sailed away fast because they were angry with Gulliver. The sailors were very frightened. I watched as they took the boat back to the ship.

The farmer decided to take Gulliver to different places and show him to the people for money. His son thought that this was a bad idea. They put Gulliver into a box on one of the horses. he had a very confortable journey. At the first town, they stayed in a hotel and advertised the show in the newspaper. During the show, Gulliver laughed and clapped. Soon he became ill because he had to travel so much. This made the farmer sad. Finally, they came to the capital city. The show was very popular. One day, the Queen came to the show and told the farmer to bring Gulliver to the palace.

Chapter 10.



1. Comprehension check. Eight of the statements about the story 1-9 are not correct. Correct them, giving a quotation from the story to prove you are right.
 
1. All of the sailors on the Adventure died. Some of them died.

2. Gulliver saw villages but he didn´t see any people in them. I did not see any buildings or any farms.

3. The Yahoos ran away because Gulliver defended himself with his sword. They surrounded me, and began shouting and making a noise.

4. Gulliver was amazed first of all when the two horses talked to him. The horses talk to each other!

5. The horses knew he wasn´t a Yahoo because he wore clothes. You look the same, but you are intelligent and clean.

6. The horse believed what Gulliver told him about horses in England. The animals you call yahoos are intelligent, like me. Horses in my country are not intelligent.
